Cleaning Silver Jewelry

Cleaning silver jewelry can somethimes be hard, especially when we talk about beaded jewelry. Since it is constructed not only from sterling silver, but also from easy damageable materials like pearls and porous gemstones, it is very important for you to be careful. On the other hand, cleaning your sterling silver is crucial since it tarnishes with the time.

There are several tips on how to clean silver jewelry that are proven to work.

  • Use home products like baking soda, non-abrasive toothpaste, and mild phosphate free detergent, or jewelry polishing cloth saturated with commercial silver cleaners.
  • Be careful on the type of brushes you choose when cleaning silver jewelry. Avoid hard bristle brushes with horsehair and abrasive style brushes. The best once to use are a baby tooth brush or very soft bristle toothbrush. You can consider also using a mushroom brush or a sunshine cloth, which can be used wet or dry.
  • Avoid cleaning in circular motion. Always clean in an up and down motion. What is very important is trying not to brush on the pearls and the soft gemstones, because they are easy to scratch and might absorb the cleaners you are using.
  • Try not to clean your jewelry right above the sink, because it can and it will knock against its hard surface.
  • For daily cleaning of your beaded jewelry simply soak the piece in warm water and mild phosphate free detergent or liquid soap.
  • After cleaning silver jewelry, use 100% cotton materials to dry it. Some of these materials include old T-shirts, cotton balls, soft flannel materials (all unbleached), and silver wipes. These materials will prevent possible scratching of your jewelry.
