How to Clean Gemstone and Pearl Jewelry

Knowing how to clean jewelry composed of gemstones and pearls is another step in the process of increasing its longevity.

Gemstones and pearls require special care. Due to their organic nature, they both are soft and porous and they can absorb any type of chemical solution or ammonia. This doesn’t mean though that you shouldn’t wash them at wall.

Pearls

Periodically wash your pearls in soapy water using mild preferably liquid soap. Avoid using detergent, since it contains chemicals that can damage them. Gently rinse your pearls and place them on a soft towel or cloth to dry. To prevent build-ups, wipe them with a soft damp cloth after wear.

Gemstones

Gemstones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, and malachite are porous rocks that can absorb anything. Therefore, avoid using even soap when cleaning them. They should be just wiped gently with moist cloth.

Gemstones with crystal composition can be treated the same way as the pearls. For best results, soak them in warm water and mild liquid soap for several hours.

Don’t ever hang your beaded jewelry to dry as this can stretch the silk thread and make it easily break apart.
